Kremsmünster Monastery Library

The magnificent monastery library was built between 1680 and 1689. It is one of the great libraries of Austria and contains about 200,000 volumes, besides 1,700 manuscripts and nearly 2,000 incunabula.

The most valuable book is the "Codex Millenarius", a Gospel Book with all four Gospels in Latin translation written around 800 in Mondsee Abbey.

Facsimiles of this codex may be found in the libraries of a number of universities throughout the world.

The most famous chronicler of the monastery was Berchtold of Kremsmünster, who wrote the "Historia Cremifanensis" and the "Narratio de ecclesia Cremsmunstrensi".

Kremsmünster was already famous in medieval times for its writing school and for its library. Kremsmünster Supralibros can be found in several other old libraries, thus bearing witness to a strong tradition of bookbinding in as early as the 14 century.
